I was updating my brag doc this morning and noticed something interesting. Two and a half months after moving from design to engineering as a UX Engineer, I’m highlighting achievements that bring my skill set in line with the full-stack engineers.
- Getting deeper into Ruby
- Writing better tests for my code with RSpec and Selenium
- Learning more advanced git operations
These are great skills to gain, of course. I’m applying them to build better design systems more effectively. The problem is that I was brought into this role for my existing skill set: my design background and front-of-the-frontend expertise.
I’ve spent the past year fighting the good fight, earning recognition for the importance of consistent and high-quality HTML and CSS. I need to remind myself that what I’m learning and accomplishing in design engineering is equally worthy of shouting about.
